RED ALERT (installation) 2022

About a year and a half ago, when we thought COVID was over, Valdes was able to procure hundreds of white cotton masks, originally intended as a dubious protection replacement for KN95 masks, which had been reserved for healthcare organizations. The installation, "Red Alert" is an interpretation of the American Flag in the time of COVID. It hangs at 12ft by 15ft and is made from 442 cotton masks painted,  hand looped and stitched  in rows.

A second layer to my installation includes augmented reality, viewable only through the screen of an iPhone or iPad.  A young woman emerges from the flag, staring directly at the viewer. Slowly she removes her mask, to blow a kiss of death, spewing blood particles and ultimately blotting out the flag.
